Gainesville Results

On Friday Feb. 22 we were at Gainesville, Fla. for the second Div. 2 Lucas Oil Drag Race series. We waited through rain that morning then when they finally got started we got a run late and we were # 5 qualifier out of 19 cars. On Sat. after a night of horrendous rains they got the track dry and started racing up in the day. We went out about 2 pm and was # 1 qualifier. We came back and made several more changes and ended up #2 qualifier by one thousandeth. Oh well tomorrow is race day. We have Charlie Yanetti in a A/DA first round. On Sunday Charlie didn’t show for first round so we got a solo pass. In the second round we had David Allen in a BB/AM and Larry red lighted. Maybe next race will be our turn.

Bradenton Results

On Wed. night, Feb. 13, at 5:30 p.m. it was 20 degrees and snowing with a thin layer
of ice under the small covering of snow we loaded the race car and headed south.
We drove until 1:30 a.m. and got to Tifton, Ga. to rest and it was still only 31
degrees. We began to wonder what kind of weekend we were going to have. We arrived
at the race track at Bradenton on Thur around 2 p.m.and unloaded the car and done
a few maintenence things and it was in the 70's. Whoa what a difference. On
Friday we done our time trial and was #7 qualifier. When we got back to the trailer
our computer wouldn't work and the shifter button he had welded to the side
of the shifter was broken off so we had to find someone to weld this and then he
took out the clutch to freshen and a floater in this was cracked so we had to borrow
one because we don't have a spare one.We called our computer guy in Nashville
and talked to him and tried several things and our computer still wasn't working.
Late that night we decided to unhook the new oxygen sensors that we had added during
the winter and now the computer works. On Sat. at noon our 2nd time trial we slowed
down but it was in the 80's and we were trying a different gear ratio in the
trans. Then on the last time trial we improved but so did everyone else. We are
now #8,but we think that is a good place. Our shifter handle broke this time and
we had to welded again. As we are getting ready to go in for the night we see our
first round competition going out the gate truck, trailer and all. There are 2 alternates
but we didn't know if they stayed. On Sunday it ended up that 3 cars were no
shows and one alternate showed up so we got a solo first round. In the second round
we had Pat Williams AAP and we got around him easily enough, in the third round
we had Pat Ross F/A and we went 51 under to beat him. In the fourth round we had
David Eaton AAP and he had a red light. In the fifth and final round we ran Grant
Lewis F/SMA who had a better light and both went 56 under to win. All in all we
had a great weekend in 80 degree weather with a runner up to start the year off.

Lucas Oil Division 4 event in Memphis, Tennessee

Larry entered the Lucas Oil Division 4 event in Memphis, Tennessee as a strong favorite to win the race. After posting a win and a semi-final finish in his first two races, Larry looked to continue his success on the divisional trail this year.
He took his ’06 Pontiac Sunfire to Memphis Motorsports Park a day early to test a new clutch in B/SM trim. The new combination showed promise right off the bat. He took that momentum into Friday’s first two qualifying sessions and posted times of 8.11 at 167.88 mph and improved to an 8.10 at a whopping 167.99 mph (-.614 under the index). He ended the day qualified in the #4 spot in the 23 car field with still more to learn on his new combination.

Saturday qualifying saw several strong passes throughout the field and as the action heated up, so did the weather. After aborting his pass in the third session, Larry got bumped down to the 6th spot but posted the 3rd quickest run in Saturday’s fourth and final session with an 8.12 second blast at another huge speed of 167.97 mph. This set the stage for final eliminations in what promised to be an exciting day of racing.

In the opening round on Sunday, Larry was paired with the always tough Brian “Lump” Self. Lump gave Larry a good race but Larry proved to be too much for the Division 4 runner and took the win light with an out of the throttle 8.15 (-.56). Next up was another Division 4 hitter, Pete Carberry. Both drivers got out of the gate with good reaction times and gave the fans a great race. Larry was again off the throttle early to protect his index and could not hold off the 194 mph charge of Carberry. The margin of victory was just .010 in a great drag race.

Although he hoped to go deeper into eliminations, Larry learned a lot about his new combination and hopes to continue to improve on it at his next event in Valdosta, Ga. He is currently leading the Division 2 Jeg’s All Stars standings by a comfortable margin and with a good outing in Georgia he should all but lock up his spot in the all star challenge.
